16500rpm, why would anyone want to do that to their ears?
Might be cheaper and faster to just buy two SSDs with no cooler and let them throttle sometimes? (in a given budget)?

It's the same reason why 1U servers are obscenely loud; with a fan that's only an inch in size you need to run them incredibly fast to move a meaningful amount of air.

The fact that even at that speed its only moving 2 CFM says it all.

It's good to see all the useful technical info being posted here, but does anybody have any technical details / diagrams on this new "Vapo-Bearing" technology ?
  • PeachNCream - Thursday, November 23, 2017 - link

Yeah, it heats up a liquid that contains nicotine and other chemicals for flavor that you basically inhale. Some people do that instead of smoking cigarettes so it would make sense that cooling fans are getting into it too.

2cfm for a 20mm radial fan is amazing. Then again, 16500 rpm is also amazing(ly loud and completely unsuited for home use).

    Exactly my thoughts.
25dB just to cool m.2? But there are RGB LEDs included so I guess it's OK to be loud...

Although I became suspicious at "aluminum heatsink painted to resemble copper"
  • MrSpadge - Wednesday, November 22, 2017 - link

What a bad product, IMO! They spend money on bling-bling lights, but do not even include PWM control or its own temperature sensor for the fan? Let the fan idle under regular loads & idle (the heat sink will suffice) and only spin up if needed.

    And to nitpick:
"it only says it makes SSDs 25% cooler, but that is not a very precise valuation"
It is precise but almost meaningless ;)

That’s my complaint too. This is overall not a bad idea, and I think people need to understand that 20mm fans nominal speeds are anywhere from 7k to 20k rpm. And they aren’t very loud. At 16k it’s probably near silent. At 20k most don’t even crack 31dB. They likely settled on 16k to extend service life.

But PWM control could focus the RPM with thermal demand. There is no need for it to run at 16k all the time. The lack of PWM implies this is a poor quality fan, not something out of a server like a Sunon.
  • LordanSS - Wednesday, November 22, 2017 - link

Yeah the idea isn't bad. Personally tho, I'd get a M.2 heatsink from Alphacool or EKWB, grab one of those tiny Noctua fans (they have ones rated for 13dB), a little bit of improvisation and voila...

25dB is half the noise of a library. https://www.fceia.unr.edu.ar/acustica/comite/sound...

    Facts > uninformed internet hysteria.
  • surt - Wednesday, November 22, 2017 - link

On the plus side, 16khz is a nice high-end of human hearing squeal. Nobody minds high pitched squeals!
  • stephenbrooks - Wednesday, November 22, 2017 - link

It's 16k RPM not RPS. That puts it at 16500/60 = 275Hz and a few harmonics of that. Bang in the middle of our sensitivity range!
  • basroil - Wednesday, November 22, 2017 - link

25dB is massive considering noctua 120mm high flow fans are rated for <20dB (half the noise level of that) and deliver 50x more flow (so much, much cooler)
  • ZeDestructor - Thursday, November 23, 2017 - link

36x the flow area, with significantly less of that flow area taken by the motor, and an axial fan compared to this radial fan (axial fans typically get much higher airflow than radial fans). Easy to get 50x the flow for half the noise if you think about it for more than -3s.
  • basroil - Thursday, November 23, 2017 - link

Of course it is. And usually you ALREADY HAVE ONE OF THESE FANS PROVIDING COOLING. If your case has an intake and output fan combo, you likely are getting more CFM over the device as it is without additional forced convection. Don't spout nonsense about "flow restriction since the m.2 is under a gpu", since if it was then this cooler won't fit either!
  • StrangerGuy - Wednesday, November 22, 2017 - link

Oh, so the dustbusters in 1U rack servers me and others deal with everyday aren't facts but just uninformed internet hysteria?
  • nagi603 - Thursday, November 23, 2017 - link

When a manufacturer says 25dB, they are usually bullshitting. I've had 19dB fans that were quite a bit louder than a library.
  • TheWereCat - Thursday, November 23, 2017 - link

They can say it's 0dB because they tested the noise from 1000km far away
  • MrSpadge - Thursday, November 23, 2017 - link

I've had fans where the manufacturer claimed 19 dB and they were not silent and definitely not library sound. Any dB rating depends highly on the distance to the sound source, so there's quite some leeway. Sure, the noise of that fan doesn't sound terrible, but it's still going to be unnecessary most of the time for SSDs with proper idle modes.
  • Magichands8 - Wednesday, November 22, 2017 - link

Or the consumer could just buy an SSD in U.2 form factor. Of course, that would make their system quieter, reduce clutter inside their case and save them some money but it would totally deny them the exquisite bling and prestige that comes with owning this fine cooling shroud.
  • mapesdhs - Friday, November 24, 2017 - link

Or a cheap but effective alternative, buy a simple heatsink (such as B00REFIX1C on Amazon, 2x 150mm, cut in half provides four heatsinks), attach with adhesive pad (I used the Akasa AK-TT12-80), total cost per M.2 device: approx $2. Doesn't have the bling, but then I long for the day all this RGB nonsense finally ends, it's as dumb as go-faster stripes on cars.
  • yifu - Sunday, December 3, 2017 - link

a heatsink 5-10€ for M.2 SSD on ebay or amazon, done! Silent ! I kill you!!!

I Chinese they will call this " taking off pants for a fart "
